Tutorial: How to Make Curly Dreads

How to Make Curly Dreads
This tutorial explains how to curl dreads, however you can also apply it to any hair that is made from kanekalon, like braids, twists, or any of the wide variety of manufactured dreads that are available. Once again, though, the hair must be kanekalon -- if you have manufactured dreads, they may be made from 100% synthetic hair or a blend and will not curl as well as kanekalon.

This tutorial does not explain how to make the dreads themselves. For instructions on how to make dreads, please refer to our other tutorials.

What You will Need
- Dreads made from kanekalon jumbo braid
- Rubber bands
- A steamer or a kettle of boiling water. Kanekalon seals at around 200°F. If you're at a high enough altitude where water boils at a lower temperature than that, we recommend using a steamer.

- A dowel, PVC pipe, foam curlers, broom handle, etc (anything to wrap the dreads around to get the curl shape)

Instructions
1. Make yourself some dreads using our tutorials, another method of your choice, or use some dreads that you already have on hand.

2. If you are using a wooden dowel, wrap it in tinfoil or plastic wrap to keep water from seeping into the wood. If you're using PVC pipe, a plastic broom handle, curlers, etc, you can omit this step. I'm using PVC pipe for the tutorial, so the example pictures will not show the wrapping.

3. Use a rubber band to fasten the end of one of your dreads to the dowel.

4. Wrap the dread around the dowel and fasten the other end with another rubberband. Repeat until you run out of room.

5. Steam the dreads or pour boiling water over them to set the curls.

6. Allow your dreads to cool off completely before removing them from the dowel. Once they are cool, you can take them off and do another batch.
